State Fair

We had a great time at the State Fair. Kate rode her first roller coaster (see below) and her first BIG ferris wheel. Can you find her on the roller coaster? Jeff taught her to put her hands in the air. She is a very brave little girl. I enjoyed riding the rides with her too since I couldn't ride anything last year.

Seeing Kate way up in the air made me a bit nervous, but she enjoyed it.

Feeding the animals was her favorite part.

Mom's Birthday Fun

We went to the beach to celebrate my birthday a few weeks ago. Although we had to navigate some high water to get there, we had a great time fishing, visiting the aquarium, exploring Fort Macon, and eating some great seafood.

Kate's fish is much bigger than Mommy's!

Kate and Matthew enjoyed watcing the fish, otters, and turtles at the aquarium.

Exploring Fort Macon and defending it from the Pirates was a fun adventure. We found that it was easier to explain protecting the shore from Pirates than trying to explain the American Civil War to a three year old. She, of course, asked a million questions about both! Don't worry Kate, we will make sure you understand the Civil War by the time you're six.

A little update on our seven month old. Maco, Kate's nickname for Matthew and what Jeff calls his Brazilian soccer name, is now an expert at sitting up and has two teeth! He is starting to prefer standing on your lap rather than sitting-it gives the arms quite a workout, but he is a fun little boy. He also said his first word...Mama...actually the first time it was "mamamama", but the next day, on Mama's birthday, he said just "Mama". It was the best birthday present ever. Although he has only said it a couple of times since then, I'm still claiming it-especially because Kate's first word was Dada!

Finally, A New Update

Yes, the last month of summer vacation came and went without a single blog post...so sorry I failed to update anything in August. Three reasons, well maybe four, we were very busy with Jeff and Aunt Gina's birthday palooza, getting ready for Aunt Heather and Uncle Kyle's fabulous wedding, and then getting prepared to return to work and school. I also have finally been convinced, by my friends, to give facebook a try and now update that anytime I can steal Jeff's blackberry...so convenient for facebook, not so much for blogging. So now that the farmer's market corn on the cob is no longer in season,

and sleeping in late whenever we feel like it is not an option,

and having slumber parties in our brother's room any night of the week isn't happening,

and staying in our pajamas to play with our dolls, ponies, dinosaurs, and dogs all day rarely is possible,

and going to the movies in the middle of the afternoon (we took Kate to see Toy Story 3-her first movie theater experience) can only occur on the weekends,

and we've adjusted to our new schedules...

we finally have some updates on what the Costa Family has been up to!

Matthew at Six Months

Matthew turned six months on the 10th. I love this age, babies are a joy at any age, but six month olds are so joyful I can hardly stand it. Matthew is a smiling, content, but active little boy. He is reaching for everything, rolls over both ways, loves to look at himself in the mirror (see below), and can sit up without support - he sometimes loses his balance when he reaches for toys. Changing his diaper and clothes is becoming a challenge. His changing table is becoming the site of wrestle mania in our house. He eats a full array of babyfood and loves those gerber puffs. We are trying to teach him how to sign "more" when he wants more of something. His current signal is to grunt or growl (not a habit that we want to encourage)! Kate did very well learning to sign basic words like more, all done, and thank you before she could say them. I just can't remember when we started teaching her to use sign language, so we will see how it goes with Matthew.

At his six month check up he weighed 23lbs 14oz (over 97%) and was 27 inches long (85th %), so his length is finally catching up to his weight. His umbilical hernia is also completely healed, so we are thankful for that. The doctor said, "great news...he is perfect!" We agree. Matthew is currently getting his first tooth (thank goodness for Motrin)! Hopefully we will have a toothy grin to show off soon.

Miss Kate

Our little girl is going to preschool and she loves it. Seriously, if I pick her up too early, like before they have their afternoon snack or before share time on Friday afternoons, she starts crying. She is making friends, and we think she has her first crush! His name is Thomas and we hear about him ALL the time. I'm in a bit of a panic about it, but Jeff is handling it in a pretty calm manner. It makes us so proud when her teachers tell us what a great listener she is and how much they enjoy having her in class.

Two other things Kate loves to do is help me in the kitchen and love on Matthew. Above is a picture of our Labor Day project, Dora cupcakes. They came out pretty well. Kate loves to help cook and even helps set the table for dinner and, carefully, helps to clear the table after dinner.

Kate is an adoring big sister. She loves Matthew so much and Matthew loves her just as much. He watches everything she does and is so happy when she talks and plays with him. Kate loves to feed him, sneak him extra puffs to eat, and help me put him to bed. Luckily, all three of us can fit into the rocking chair in Matthew's nursery and it is the best part of my day to read stories to both of them and sing songs to Matthew. I could watch them interact all day, although I do say "be gentle" and "he's just a baby" at least 20 times a day! Can you tell Jeff and I are proud of her?

Heather and Kyle's Wedding

We had a wonderful few days in Wilmington, NC celebrating my youngest sister's wedding! My sister Jennifer and I were the matrons of honor and our girls Kate and Scarlett were the flower girls. Talk about stress! However, once we all arrived in Wilmington everything was fun, exciting, and wonderful. Kate and Scarlett did great, both of them made it down the aisle and dropped their rose petals and then stood with Jennifer and I as Aunt Heather made her way down the aisle. Everyone looked beautiful and Jeff was a great help the whole weekend.

Jennifer and I started the weekend off by hosting a bridal tea on the river walk for Heather and her bridal party. The food was great and helped get everyone in the mood for a fabulous wedding weekend.

The rehearsal dinner was fun. My cousin from Guatemala, Alejandro, came to visit for a few weeks. It was wonderful to have him with us. Here he is with Kate and Mom.

Birthday Palooza!

The last week of July was all about celebrating Jeff and Aunt Gina's birthday. Their birthday's are five days apart and it has become a tradition since we moved to Raleigh to spend the entire week celebrating these two fabulous people. It was a carefree week full of fun, laughter, and love.

We spent lots of time relaxing by and in the pool.

Jeff's birthday included a water balloon fight. Not sure who enjoyed that more, Jeff, Kate, or Aunt Gina.

And of course, most of the week was all about the food-lots and lots of seafood was consumed, shipped in from all over the country. I think I gained half my baby weight back in one week, but it was good!

Jeff's mom found a bakery that makes a tiramisu cake (one of Jeff's favorite deserts). It was delicious. Jeff most certainly enjoyed it.

Gina was the birthday princess for her birthday complete with a pinata, bubbles, and ice cream-cookie sandwiches.

Happy 4 Month Birthday Matthew

Matthew turned 4 months old today! Jeff, Matthew, and I came home a couple of days early from the beach while Kate spent two more days with everyone. Jeff left to work a soccer camp for the week on Friday, so Matthew and I have had a fun couple of days together. We tried out his jump up swing and he loved it-I had to put a box under his feet because he is still about an inch above the ground-our ceiling in the living room is really high. Four months also means eating from a spoon and the adventure of solid food begins! Matthew did not seem too happy about sitting in his high chair for the first time and I'm not sure that he was too impressed with his rice cereal.

We sure did make a mess and I'm not sure how much he actually swallowed! Matthew, sweetheart, if you can get the hang of this, I promise I'll give you something tastier than rice cereal.

Just in case you are wondering, yes, our couch is in the kitchen. We are having our carpets cleaned this week, so Jeff moved most of the furniture out of our living room before he left on Friday. It looks like I'm running a daycare center because all that is left in the room is a rocking chair and baby toys. Here are more happy pictures!

We are spending the week at Topsail Island and my wonderful husband brought every cord imaginable-computer cords, dvd cords, S-video cords,baby monitor cords, video game cords, headphones, even my camera cord-so I can update pictures of vacation, while we are on vacation. Seriously, what would I do without him and what would he do without technology! Topsail has their 4th of July celebration on the 3rd, so we went out for a delicious seafood dinner and then went to the park to enjoy the music and fireworks.

Matthew has been pure joy on his first family vacation. He has been such a good baby with the travel and sleeping in his pack and play. It has also been a blessing to have the Matthews' family together. Jeff and I have been able to spend some focused, one on one time with Matthew while Kate is having fun with her cousin, grandparents, aunts, and uncles. Matthew is also getting to know all of these faces of people who love him and build up his confidence by telling him how cute and adorable he is (which is totally true)!!!!

Beach Pictures

I have taken tons of pictures in four days, but have tried to just give you a sampling. I just can't stop taking pictures of our kids! After all, it is Matthew's first trip to the beach. He makes it out to the beach for about 30-45 minutes every day. Jeff takes Kate out after breakfast while Matthew finishes his morning nap and has his mid-morning bottle. Then he and I go out to join the group. It works out great because Jeff really isn't a "sit on the beach the whole day" kind of guy, so he is happy to take Matthew back in after a while (especially if there is a soccer game to watch).

Kate and Scarlett are having a great time. They are now at the age where they can run in the shallow water without an adult being two inches away. We have had a great time watching them run, jump, and make up all kinds of games to play. The weather has been great and, aside from the shark advisory, the ocean has been perfect-calm and beautiful.

Summertime Fun

We are off to our annual beach vacation next week, so I thought I would finish updating the blog for June. We have been keeping Kate busy. Here she is with her friend Jack playing in our mini-water park. There goes Jack!

Here is Kate dancing. Some friends of ours have bands playing in their neighborhood every Thursday night in the summer and invited us to come anytime. There are activities for the kids, good music, and good fellowship on the lawn. This night Kate and her friend Dylan kept asking for more songs...I think the band played for 30 extra minutes just because they kept yelling for one more song!

I really think they just wanted to finish their milkshake!

Prancing and Dancing

Kate participated in her first summer camp a few weeks ago called "Prancing and Dancing". She got a new lunch box, ballet shoes, and leotards and she was so excited about all of it. The camp introduced her to ballet and gymnastics. She did cry for about 90 seconds a couple of days when I dropped her off, but every afternoon she would come running with a big smile telling us about her fun afternoon. At the end of the week, the group gave a skills performance-Kate's first recital (of many to come, I think)! Jeff and I had the best time watching our little girl, we were so proud and I will never forget it. Jeff did well with all the pink, twirling children and was Kate's biggest fan. Little Man

Matthew loves to play on his changing table. Probably because he has a captive audience making sure he doesn't fall off! He is doing great on his tummy and I feel like he is going to roll over any day. He has also hit the drooling stage full force. Looking at these pictures, you would think that I never wipe the drool, but I promise I do! It just seems to be losing battle at the moment.

We love Nana's pool! Luckily, we are very pool rich with one right down the block in our neighborhood and Nana's pool 10 minutes away. Quite a blessing when temperatures reach the 90's every day! Here is Kate in her own personal pool, she has one at Nana's and one at home-it's a charmed life.

Father's Day Water Park

We turned the backyard into a mini water park Father's Day afternoon for Kate, Scarlett, and Matthew, complete with a slip and slide, sprinklers, pool, and sprinkler hopscotch. Grandma, Granddaddy, Uncle Dan, Aunt Jennifer, and cousin Scarlett came for lunch and water play. Kate loved the slip and slide. After getting some coaching from her Dad, she would take a running start and catapult herself down. I have great video footage; hopefully I can get Jeff to make a clip of it for me to post on the blog soon. Kate had so much fun and was so tired, that she literally fell asleep at the kitchen table before I could get her dinner in front of her-that has never happened. She almost hit her head on the table, but I got to her before she did!

Father's Day Morning

Father's Day was a great day. After our traditional celebratory breakfast of heart-shaped blueberry pancakes, Jeff opened his gifts. After getting some clothes from me and some much needed athletic socks from Matthew, Kate gave him a sweet book called "Dance me, Daddy". After reading it together (Matthew eventually lost interest), Jeff said to me, "What are you trying to do make me cry?"

We didn't quite make him cry, but we did make him laugh with this certificate. He received one from each of us and has already used one to watch the amazing game between the US and Algeria on Wednesday. Good choice, Jeff!

The fine print says *does not apply to matches played during planned family obligations, but does apply to matches recorded on DVR because of said family obligations, **complete silence in the home is not guaranteed, ***all possible effort shall be made to refrain from waking sleeping babies or frightening children when celebrating or wallowing in sorrow. I did a pretty good job holding up my end of the bargain, but I did have to take Matthew upstairs during the end of the match because things were getting a little tense downstairs.

The family all decked out for the World Cup! We were all dressed up for an end of the school year party and to watch the England vs. US match with friends. Matthew was decked out in his soccer gear, a very fun baby gift and Kate in her USA colors. Matthew watched most of the game with the "guys" but was given quite the fright by the loud cheers when the US scored. Jeff is in heaven with soccer constantly on tv-it is the perfect storm-summer break and World Cup. However, since this is our first World Cup with kids, thank heaven for DVR!

Kayak Fun

Aunt Gina came for a visit over the Memorial Day weekend. We spent the day at Falls Lake having brunch, kayaking, and swimming. Kate enjoyed making sand castles on the "beach" with Gina and swimming with Daddy. It was a beautiful day and a lot of fun.

Matthew Bryce

Here is Matthew at 3 months old, in all his glory. He is our sweet chunk. At his two months doctor's visit he weighed 15 pounds 9 ounces (off the charts) and was 23 inches long. I would estimate that he now weighs about 17 pounds and has lengthened out a bit, but has maintained his "thunder thighs". He is sleeping through the night and has reduced his feedings from 7 times a day to 5. He insists on going to sleep around 8:30 and usually wakes up between 6:30 and 7:00. Matthew has an umbilical hernia which causes his belly button to stick out. We are praying it heals on its own (which they usually do) without surgery. If it doesn't heal, surgery would be done when he is 4 years old. Matthew loves to "talk" and entertains us with his frequent smiles. Kate is quite enamored with him, the first thing she asks when she wakes up in the morning is "where is my brother?" We are looking forward to a fun summer with these two!

That Kind of Mom

I've become that Mom-the one who dresses her kids alike when she can. I didn't know if I would be that kind of Mom, but apparently, I am. It's just too tempting, especially when friends make cute things for them to wear. I have complex feelings about this because my sister, Jennifer, and I were often dressed alike as children and just as often we were asked if we were twins. Jennifer and I would then look at each other in exasperation, wondering how anyone could possibly think we were twins since we are two years apart in age, and politely explain that we were not twins. Now, it has become a sweet memory, one in which Jennifer and I laugh about, and we have even found ourselves inadvertently dressing alike as adults. Our daughters, Kate and Scarlett, are repeating history. People often ask us if they are twins and again Jennifer and I look at each other, this time in surprise, and explain that they are in fact cousins. As Kate and Matthew get older, I don't think they will be dressed alike too often, but I'm not ruling out the occassional matching or complimentary Christmas outfits!

Strawberry Patch

One of our favorite things to do in the Spring is to go pick strawberries at a local farm and then make lots of strawberry shortcake and strawberry pies. We have done this every year since Kate has been born and every year she gets more and more helpful. Just a side note, yes Kate is wearing Oakley sunglasses and no we did not buy them. Jeff found them at a soccer field and unable to find the owner, brought them home. So now, Jeff and Kate have matching sunglasses. Who knew they made Oakleys for 3 year olds?! Being curious, we looked up how much they cost- let's just say they are about 4 times more expensive than what I would pay for sunglasses for myself because, unlike Jeff, I don't spend half of everyday in the sun.

Goodberry's and National Boards

Summer is almost here which means it's time to take advantage of a great ice cream/frozen custard place we have-Goodberry's. This stuff is awesome and is a favorite place to visit when it gets warm outside, lots of people even go in the middle of winter. The four of us went to celebrate the completion of my (Maria's) National Board exam-Jeff took the day off to stay with the kids. The exam, which is all essay writing, was interesting. Some questions were no problem and some questions I wasn't too sure about, but the important thing is that it is done and I don't have to stress over it for a while. Here I am celebrating. I look pretty tired, but that's what happens when you've been studying, getting up every few hours during the night to take care of your little guy, and getting up at extra early to get to an exam on time.

Kate loves to throw pennies in the fountatin and make wishes. Luckily, her Daddy is very generous so she makes multiple requests. We asked her what she wished for-these were her responses:

1st wish-"That Precious and Max (our dogs) stop barking." (We didn't know this was a problem for her.)

2nd wish-"To help Grannie get better." (Such a sweet, empathetic kid)

3rd wish-"Mommy, I can't tell you" (Who knows what she wished for-this conitnued until Daddy was out of pennies,)

Family Bath Fun

We gave both children a bath together in th e"BIG" tub, as Kate says, for the first time this weekend (with Mommy in the tub and Daddy playing lifegaurd outside the tub). It was fun family time. Kate and I had a pretty awesome squirt gun fight before Matthew joined us.

Matthew and his Giraffe

Matthew is two months old today and he has already changed so much. We don't go to the doctor until Friday so I don't have a weight and height update, but I can tell you he is wearing 6 month size clothing already. He is starting to smile more and more, especially when he sees this giraffe or a ceiling fan. He loves the fan in our family room. He smiles and talks to it. I think he is asking it to be his friend and gets his feelings hurt when it doesn't respond back- it is so cute and innocent. He is saying agoo and ohh and is noticing the world around him. He also likes being outside and looking at the trees and plants. He has just started sleeping for a four to five hour stretch at night, which the experts say is sleeping through the night, but when he is waking up at 2 in the morning it is not sleeping through the night in my book! Happy Two Month Birthday to our sweet boy.

Kate joined Jeff for an overnight soccer trip to Charlotte with his high school team. It was her first solo trip with Daddy. She had a wonderful time riding the charter bus with the girls, cheering on the team, and doing her first bit of coaching (more on that later). She was her Daddy's shadow and little helper. These pictures were taken by the father of one of the players who made the trip to watch the team. I'm so glad he took these pictures.

One of her favorite things to do was to get water from the water cooler. Jeff said she was a little beaver going back and forth to get water.

Daddy's Soccer Game

There was a time, not so long ago, when I would attend all of Jeff's soccer games come rain or shine, sweltering weather or freezing temperatures, home matches or those that were hours away. It didn't matter how stressful the day had been or what was going on the next day, I was always there. It was great. I loved supporting him and enjoyed getting to know his players and their families. However, when Kate came along, I became a little less inclined to go to every game. Now, the weather has to be good, the start time not too late, and the day not too hectic, but when we go we have lots of fun. Although I miss being as involved in the soccer aspect of Jeff's life right now, I wouldn't change it for anything. When we do get a chance to go to a game, seeing Kate (and eventually Matthew) running around, not so patiently waiting until they can run across the field to Dad, is the best. So we made it to our first game of the spring season this past Friday and had a great time. Kate ate her Chick-fil-a dinner, cheered for the team, and played soccer; Matthew had a bottle and slept; and I monitored the kids more than I watched the game, but at least we were there! A Day at the Park

We had a picnic at a local park last weekend. We had beautiful weather and Jeff had a rare spring weekend with no soccer-so we took advantage. I was proud of Kate because she walked around almost the whole lake (there are a couple of nice walking trails around the lake). She didn't get tired until the last curve so at that point we put Matthew in the bjorn with Jeff and I held the infant carrier so Kate could sit in the stroller. Needless to say, we need to get a double stroller soon-that infant carrier was heavy! We had fun exploring the walking trails, feedng ourselves and the ducks, chasing butteflies, and playing soccer.

Matthew's 1 Month Birthday

Matthew turned a month old on April 10th. Kate was more than happy to blow out a candle and eat a cupcake in his honor. At Matthew's 1 month doctor's visit he weighed 11 pounds 7 ounces-a four and a half pound increase over his birth weight! That's in the 80th percentile while at 21 inches he is in the 25th percentile for length-wonder which parent he is taking after?!? He is a pretty solid boy.

Things we know about Matthew:

1. He likes to eat.

2. He pays close attention to his big sister.

3. He knows when Mommy has left the room-he doesn't really appreciate it.

4. He likes to sleep on Daddy's chest and not so much in his own crib.

5. He is no drama queen, but he is a grunter. He is usually a good baby, but makes some funny noises.

6. He doens't like his swing too much yet, but is very content in his bouncy seat, on the floor, or his car seat.

7. Changing his diaper is much more challenging than it was with Kate-you have to be quick.

8. We love him and life is good!

We had a wonderful Easter spending quality time with family and watching the NCAA Final Four games. We had a lot at stake in the games this year, with Uncle David coaching soccer at Butler University and Jeff being a long-time Duke fan. For my part, I chose Butler as my team for the tournament as my beloved tarheels suffered through a terrible season and failed to make it. I think I chose well, but I did not take sides in the final game. Folks, I have seriously grown as a person if I didn't fiercely cheer against Duke for the sake of my husband! Okay, back to the important part of this post-

While Jeff was on paternity leave, he and Kate went on a couple of outings. Here they are leaving for the Natural History Museum to see the dinosaurs-Kate LOVES dinosaurs. They also went to the megalodon shark exhibit (a prehistoric shark, the largest shark thought to exist) and stood in the mouth of a megalodon shark. Kate thought that was pretty cool.

The next day, they went to play "golf" and ride go-karts. It sounded like they had a pretty exhilarating ride around the track and knowing my husband, I'm sure it was. Glad I wasn't there to see it-my protective instincts might have ruined the fun. Kate really enjoyed her days out with Daddy.

We came home from the hospital Saturday morning. The weather has been beautiful and we were so glad to be home. We had a good weekend full of new experiences with our little guy. Here is our traditional mailbox picture, much like the one we took when we brought Kate home.

Matthew Bryce Costa was born on March 10th and 10:05am. He weighed 6 pounds 15 ounces and was 20 and 1/4 inches long. Everything went smoothly. Mom and baby are doing great!

Big Sister Kate is doing great too. She was awesome at the hospital and has enjoyed being thoroughly spoiled by her grandparents. She has already declared all the things she is going to teach her baby brother and is loving on him when she gets the chance. See how she is carefully holding his head.

Matthew was showered with love on Sunday, the 7th. My mom and sisters threw us a baby shower brunch at a local bed and breakfast. It was a beautiful day with great fun, food, and fellowship.

Lobster Gram (Happy Valentine's Day)

Last Christmas, Nonnie gave us a lobster gram, which is a lobster dinner for two. We finally used it to celebrate Valentine's Day and it was delicious. We chose to get two live lobsters with all the fixins'. Needless to say everyone enjoyed it, especially Jeff who can never have enough seafood. Kate called the lobsters "monsters", saying, "The monster's are staring at me, Daddy!". Thanks for dinner and the fun memory, Nonnie!

Baby Boy Update-1 Week to Go!

I felt I should write something, since by this time next week, we will be loving on our little boy. Although braxton hicks contractions are in full swing, the doctor says I should make it to the 10th. No other signs of impending labor-my childen just don't like to come early. Thanks for all the well wishes and prayers from everyone. We can't wait to introduce you to the newest member of our family. Here's the last pre-birthday "update"

Total weight gain/loss: I've actually leveled off, haven't gained any the last two weeks!
Maternity clothes? yes, although none of my work clothes are very comfortable anymore-I'm so tired of them

Best moment this week: Nursery is almost finished, the two-hour delay we had for school today, looking forward to a fun baby shower coming up, and helping my baby sister find her wedding dress!

Name: We have picked a name! This little guy will be Matthew Bryce Costa. Matthew means "gift of God" which this baby certainly is and, as most of you know, is taken from my maiden name. Bryce is Jeff's middle name and means "son of a noble man" and I don't know a more noble man than my hubby. We can't wait to meet you Matthew.

What I miss: Not being able to pick up Kate and hold her as long as I want or help her across the monkey bars on her swing set. I also can't wait to start working out again.

Kate Update

Since I've done a baby boy update, I thought I would update on my 3 year old. Ironicly she's actually three years old, three weeks, and three days old today. Kate had her 3 year check up last week and she was so good. We had a very long wait, lots of sick kids :-( there to see the doctor, but Kate was very patient and good in the waiting room. She did great with the nurse, named every picture put in front of her, did great on her eye test, and didn't start crying with the doctor until he was getting her shots ready. Even then, she was very obedient, just holding my hands, staying still, looking at me with big crocodile tears rolling down her face (almost broke my heart), but she was a big, big toughie! For those of you who like to know this kind of stuff-she is 37 inches tall and weighs 30 pounds, 50% in both height and weight. In other words, just perfect! Kate was excited to get TWO stickers from the doctor and then a strawberry milkshake from Chick-fil-a, while her mom had to have a chocolate one. She is very excited about being a big sister, but is now starting to ask for a little sister...uh oh

Sibling Class

Kate, Grandma, and I went to a sibling class at the hospital. Kate got to "practice" holding and swaddling a baby, see the hospital nursery, and a room like Mommy will be staying in. Kate also made a craft for her brother. Here she is listening very carefully to the teacher. She was so cute.

New York, New York

We spent Thanksgiving in New York with Jeff's grandmother and Aunt Gina. Kate was in heaven being spoiled by Nonnie and Gigi. We had a wonderful time shopping, seeing the Macy's Parade, going to the botanical gardens, and visiting with family. Kate loved seeing the ice skaters at Rockeffeller Center. We will definitely be back so she can skate. Jeff and I went to see Wicked on Broadway. It was awesome-probably the best I've seen. We were also able to catch the Duke/UConn game at Madison Square Garden-Jeff loved that. Thanks for the wonderful time and great Thanksgiving dinner Gigi and Nonnie.

We had a wonderful time celebrating Jesus' Birthday-four times! We had an early Christmas when Uncle David and Aunt Meghan visited before Christmas, then celebrated Christmas Eve at the Matthews' Homeplace, enjoyed Christmas morning at our home, and then Christmas dinner at Nana and Papa Tom's house. It's Kate's birthday today. For Jeff and I, it was the most amazing day and a miracle happening right in front of us. We feel so humbled in the presence of God's goodness to have this little princess as a part of our family. Happy Birthday to our sweet girl. We can't believe you are already turning three. You bring so much joy to everyone and we are blessed to have you as our daughter. We pray that you continue to grow, learn, and play with carefree innocence and that this is the best year yet!

Baby Boy Update-32 weeks down, 7 to go!

The big news is we set the date for the c-section. March 10th will be this little guy's birthday, unless he decides he wants to be early. There is lots to do, but the Costa household is pretty excited. I'm not sure how much longer Kate can wait!

Total weight gain/loss: gaining a steady one to two pounds every two weeks (this is following the same pattern as Kate)
Maternity clothes? yes
Stretch marks? not from this baby
Sleep? Not great, but so thankful for my body pillow. Jeff gets less and less room in the bed every week.

Food cravings: None this week-just recovered from a pretty nasty stomach virus. The IV of fluid the doctor pumped into me on Thursday was pretty good!

Weekly wisdom: Appreciate your husband! Jeff has been awesome-doing grocery shopping after soccer practice even when he's been standing in the soaking rain for two hours, giving Kate a bath for me anytime he is home in the evenings, cooking dinner, bringing me juice in the morning and running downstairs to get milk and pumpkin bread for me at nine o'clock at night-I could go on and on. I don't know what I would do without him. Thanks sweetheart!

Milestones: Baby is moving and it feels like he can hear his sister. When she's talking loudly or laughing he seems to get excited.

What Kate is saying this week: Kate is telling everyone that her baby brother's name is Wyatt (after Super Why from the Super Readers-her new favorite show). I have to keep explaining to everyone that it will probably not be the baby's name even though I told Kate it was a nice name. She also keeps telling everyone that she is going to share her toys with her brother-we'll see if that holds true.

This was taken the while Jeff was watching the first Duke basketball game of the season with Kate snuggled next to him reading many, many books out loud and Kate's favorite doll, baby Gail, wrapped up "sleeping" on top of him. If you know us, you know we are a bit basketball crazy, and Jeff is very dedicated to watching every Duke game. Notice how he is patiently trying to concentrate. He's come a long way...

We went to the Marbles Museum with the Flythe family last week for Drew's 3rd birthday. We had a fun time visiting and sharing laughs over pizza.

The Mr./Mrs. Potato Head play area was a big hit. Kate, Ella, and I had a good time. Ella kept wanting me to pick her up, I think a few times she thought I was her mama because my hair is similar to her mom's hair. It was so precious and I didn't mind at all!

We went the to the UNC/Duke football game a few weeks ago. Kate is so cute in her Carolina cheerleading outfit. She had a great time saying Go Heels! We had beautiful weather and it was a good game-with Carolina winning of course. A few days later Jeff and I went to a UNC basketball game and had a great time-it's the most wonderful time of the year when college basketball starts!

October has been a very full month of fall festivals, the state fair, and getting ready for Halloween. We had a great time at the fair. Kate got to ride every kiddie ride with Daddy and then again with Grandaddy when he and Grandma met up with us. Nana and Papa Tom took us to Hill Ridge Farms today as an early treat for Mommy's birthday. We had a fun time looking at all the animals and watching Kate explore lots of different things from a fort to a hay maze. We even had a hayride and picked out pumpkins at the pumpkin patch. Maternity clothes? sometimes, it's still mix and match, but a full maternity wardrobe is fast approaching!

Sleep? I'm up a lot at night between the backaches and bathroom breaks-already using a body pillow

Weekly wisdom: Eat iron rich foods, even though some of the foods on the list are not very appetizing. I've been anemic most of this pregnancy (that didn't happen until much later with Kate) and, until recently, it has certainly affected my energy level.
Milestones: We're into the 2nd trimester-energy level is up.
What Kate is saying this week: "Don't squish my little baby sister or brother!" (this is when Jeff hugs me or when other little kids climb on me-except, of course, when Kate is the one climbing on me)

Saturday Mornings

We received a few emails indicating that many of you out there did not really enjoy Kate's injured toe. Sorry! She was insistent about recording the injury. So here is a cute picture to make up for it. There is nothing better than a lazy Saturday morning when there is no rush to get out the door. On mornings like that, we usually cook a big breakfast, followed by a few cartoons while Mom and Dad read the paper and enjoy some coffee. Here is Kate doing her imitation of her parents-watching tv while working with a laptop on her lap and the newspaper right beside her-talk about multi-tasking. Bugfest!

We went to bugfest downtown a couple of weekends ago. Kate loves going to museums, but she wasn't too fond of the bugs. I guess a two year old might not be too impressed with a lady who has a beard made of bees! (see below) She did have a great time showing her dad all the dinosaurs (she and I had just been to the museum of natural history a few weeks before). She loves dinosaurs, I know every child has that phase, but its extra, extra cute when it is your child! Kate and her parents also enjoyed the unhealthy lunch of ice cream and funnel cake that we indulged in after we saw all the exhibits.

Happy Labor Day

Hope everyone enjoyed their Labor Day Weekend. Jeff and I mostly did a lot of labor-cleaning out closets and fixing up Kate's room. But we did get a chance to visit with Nana and Tom. Jeff's mom and I went to see Julie and Julia-pretty good movie-makes you want to get in the kitchen and cook new recipes. I tend to stick to my tried and true dishes. We did have one slight injury. Kate dropped a wooden bowl on her big toe. She insisted I take a picture of it (I think under Daddy's influence), so here it is below. Isn't it lovely? It seems to be healing just fine. I just hope the toenail doesn't come off because that will not be a fun day!

Just to prove that Kate is fine to you worriers out there...here she is playing outside while Jeff worked in the yard on Monday. We have just discovered moon sand-great stuff. It is a little easier than play-do for Kate to use and great to entertain her at soccer games. Therefore I don't hear, "Can I go see Daddy, now?" every two minutes while at Jeff's games. I just hope she doesn't one day turn around and start running across the field and get knocked over by some 16 year old kid wearing cleats!

Yes, I know she is wearing a Duke shirt-I can't help that she was born into a mixed family. Don't panic, her first love has always been the Tarheels (as seen below!). After all, Carolina did beat Duke in a friendly basketball game the night she was born.

Kate also had a tea party with Jack wearing her first "tea party" dress. It's actually a sleeping beauty dress she picked out. She loves it. It is not an easy task to get her out of it once its on! Jack and Kate are eating cookies Kate made with Ms. Gail (the sweet lady who keeps her for us during the day). Jack is holding up his headless duck, while Kate has a munched on pink pig-she had to match her pink dress!

Well, I didn't accomplish my goal of a post every calendar month-skipped the whole summer-but we have been doing lots of fun things instead like... going to the pool, the beach, Indianapolis for a special wedding, and having lots of fun with family and friends. So here's a big I'M SORRY for the delay. I think my favorite things to do this summer were to watch Kate eat ice cream and see her running around in her bathing suit. It's absolute joy watching children eat ice cream and having fun with total abandonment.

Baby Costa #2

We have exciting news...Baby Costa #2 is on the way. Here is the latest ultrasound picture. Baby is due on March 16th and we are almost through the first trimester. During our second ultrasound, the doctor said we have a very active baby-the baby looked like he/she was dancing around like crazy. Jeff and I couldn't stop laughing. Kate is excited about being a big sister. Here is a sampling of the conversation when we told her that there was a baby in mommy's tummy.

Kate: "Can the baby come out now?"

Mommy: "No, the baby has to grow bigger and bigger first."

Two minutes later...

Kate: "Can the baby come out now?"

Mommy and Daddy: "No, the baby isn't big enough yet. After your birthday the baby will come."

Two minutes later...

Kate: "Is it my birthday now?"

It might be a long 7 months! She also asked if the baby would come exploring with her-you know our Dora the Explorer has to have her partner with her!

Another New Addition!

Kate got her first swing set a couple of weeks ago. It was her "back to school" present. She is thoroughly enjoying it. We were out there one evening for two hours swinging. When Kate got down, she promptly threw up on Jeff. His response, "You haven't thrown up on me since you were 3 months old!" Ah, the joys of parenthood. Here she is eating a popsicle (she calls it a pop-pickle) in her tower. She is such a big girl. She is also now officially in a "big girl" bed and is doing great. We are in the process of redoing her room, so hopefully I'll have pictures of that soon.

To the Beach!

Be prepared-I'm going back in time to fill you in on the Costa summer fun.

We went to beach several times this summer. Early in the summer we went with friends of ours and their son Jack for a long weekend. Kate calls him "my Jack". They are such cute kids. Kate and Jack even had their first kayak ride, although the mom's were a little nervous about it. Off they go...

Below is a bit of a power struggle playing out because Kate insisted on rowing.
Of course, Daddy won that battle and everyone returned safe and happy after exploring the island across the sound.

Beach Time-Family Style!

Our annual beach trip to Topsail Island was great fun. Kate loved every moment and Jeff and I had a great time. Aunt Jennifer bought a pool for the girls to use and it turned out to be a great set up with the umbrella. Kate and cousin Scarlett went from playing in the sand to the surf to the pool to snack time and back again which gave the parents some time to relax for a while. Kate was very brave by the end of the week-she enjoyed catching some waves with her daddy.

Kate also enjoyed some quality time with her cousin. Here she is making a "silly face"! They are so sweet!

July Birthdays!

We celebrated two great birthdays in July-Daddy's and Aunt Gina's. We celebrated Jeff's on the morning of David's wedding day-complete with Dora balloons. Gina came down the NC for birthday-palooza the week after the wedding.

It's not a birthday at the Costa house without birthday hats!
Kate helped Mommy make Gina's special birthday pie and helped to blow out the candles, of course!

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there, especially to our two moms who taught us so much-including how wonderful and important it is to make special memories with your children. THANK YOU for all the special memories you have given us. If you love your mom and/or are a mom, you should check out this video by Taylor Swift called "The Best Day" . (It is a country song, but it's good and I dare you not to cry).

We had a Mother's Day outing to Pullen Park today. It turned out to be a gorgeous afternoon. Kate loved it-the playground, the boat rides, the train ride, the wildlife-everything! Here are some pictures of our adventure. Yes, we were pretending to be Dora the Explorer half the time-watch out for Swiper the Fox!

Paddle Boats

Daddy was nice enough to paddle his girls around the pond at the park. It was quite the adventure. We saw two snakes (yuck!), four turtles, and many ducks and birds. The snakes were swimming around the dock used to get on the boats. They were almost a deal breaker for me. Although they were pretty big, my biologist father would be so disappointed if I let swimming snakes scare me off, so away we went. Kate sat up front with Jeff and I was in the back making sure Kate stayed seated and keeping a look out for snakes! Yes, I'm a wimp.

I have to thank Dora for setting such a good example for children. Kate had no complaints about wearing a life jacket or staying in her seat because Dora says to stay safe every time she and Boots (the monkey) get on a boat. We had a wonderful adventure!

I know, I know, how long has it been since I've posted? It has been so long that blogspot has tons of new features that make it even easier to compose this things! I'm going to follow my friend's advise and TRY not to let a calendar month go by before I update because I've heard loud and clear that you all do miss having updates. Jeff told me the other day that I only needed to do two things to be the perfect wife-tell him "I love you" every day and update the blog. Since I'm pretty sure I do the first thing on a daily basis, here is my attempt to finally be the perfect wife! I'm just throwing many pictures at you without a lot of commentary, but hope you enjoy. A lot of these posts have been sitting in here as drafts and I'm finally posting them, so they go back all the way to Christmas!

Paint the Earth

She took it really seriously, I don't even think she got any paint on Aunt Gigi's old painting T-shirt that was passed on to us, although she did get it all over her arms.

Hola-Hola

Sadly, my Grandma, Yolanda Hurtarte, died at the end of February after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Kate called her Hola-Hola and still asks about her, but she will tell you that Hola-Hola is with Jesus. We have missed her dearly. Fortunately my aunts from Canada and Guatemala were able to be here and it was neat to see all of them together. Here they are from left to right-my Mom and Kate, Sandra, and Ana.
